Coping with a Crying Baby

Caring for a crying baby can be incredibly stressful for parents, especially when nothing seems to soothe them. It’s important to remember that most cases of child physical abuse, including Shaken Baby Syndrome, happen when a parent becomes overwhelmed and loses control. To help prevent this, consider the following strategies:

  1. Ensure your baby’s basic needs are met (feeding, diaper changes, appropriate clothing, etc.).
  2. Offer a pacifier to comfort the baby.
  3. Gently rock your baby in a cradle or in your arms.
  4. Carry your baby in a body carrier or simply hold them close while walking around.
  5. Call a friend for support.
  6. Invite a friend, relative, or neighbor over to help with the baby or to give you a break.
  7. Take time for yourself: listen to your favorite music, make a cup of coffee or tea, exercise, take a shower or bath, or read something you enjoy.
  8. Change your activity: shake out a rug, scrub the floor, clean out a closet, or throw away trash.
  9. Splash cold water on your face.
  10. Hug a pillow for comfort.
  11. Sit down, close your eyes, and visualize a peaceful place from your memory. Stay still for several minutes.
  12. Press your lips together and count to 10, or even better, to 20.
  13. Write down encouraging words or thoughts. Keep the list for future reference.
  14. If nothing else works, place your baby safely in their crib, close the door, and check on them every 5 minutes until you feel calmer.
