Know the warning signs of youth violence
Youth violence can have horrific outcomes not just on a family, but on a community as a whole. The rise in school shootings offer a stark example of the tragedy that can result from ignoring warning signs of this problem. Bullying, gang violence, and assaults against family members can also occur when a child is struggling with mental health issues, substance abuse, and other factors that can contribute to violent tendencies.
Some warning signs of youth violence may be more obvious than others. These include cruelty to animals, vandalism of property, bringing weapons to school, setting fires, bullying younger children or peers, or making threats. However, the warning signs are not always so blatant. Children may also be more likely to commit violence if they are exposed to abuse or neglect, have a family history of violence of suicide attempts, are socially isolated, or experience discipline problems at school.
Children may exhibit warning signs without ever resorting to violence. However, parents who are concerned about the potential for their child to commit violence should be aware of these signs and what steps they should take to find help.
