Resources for Older Adults to Prevent Social Isolation
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, social isolation has escalated to epidemic levels, severely affecting individuals’ emotional and physical health, particularly among older adults. Social service providers emphasize that challenges such as food insecurity, lack of healthcare access, transportation issues, and financial difficulties can intensify feelings of loneliness and isolation in this population. Research indicates that being connected to a community and having access to support systems can significantly enhance overall mental and physical well-being, helping to reduce social isolation and loneliness. A strong social network that people can depend on during times of stress and need can make a substantial difference in their lives.
In response, Connecticut’s state agencies and social service partners have established a network of programs and services to support older adults. These resources are designed to help them connect with social networks and access the necessary support to alleviate feelings of isolation as they age.
